Aboriginal Rights
The rights and freedoms of Indigenous People in different parts of their world. Touches on the debate of whether they should have special rights due to the mistreatment of their communities in the past.
Women's Rights
The rights of women in the world based on the belief that men are the superior gender. Although women have come a long way (gaining the right to vote, work, etc.), they still face inequity as they continually recieve unequal pay and are expected to behave in a certain manner.
Labour Movement
The fight for better work conditions, wages, and hours. Effects the work force in modern society, ultimately changing our country's economy.

Civil Rights Movement
Beginning with the fight for equality between Caucasian people and African-American's, the Civil Right's Movement has become an international movement based on equity for all people despite race, ethnicity, or culture.
Civil Right's Movement Essay
Stemming from the Southern States during the late 19th century, the Civil Rights Movement is the basis of equality for all people-regardless of race, gender, age, and sexual orientation.Those who have not experienced social injustices may find difficulty in comprehending the struggles and adversities in relation to civil inequality. Equality is different than that of equity, although both aim to achieve equal opportunity for all persons. Equality ensures the same sources of support for all people whereas equity offers support for those in need. However, justice and liberation can bring about a peaceful society in which all individuals experience fair treatment and equal opportunity.
The African-American Civil Rights Movement encompasses a series of events during the 1950’s-60’s in which the blacks challenged white superiority.Although the Emancipation Proclamation was announced by President Lincoln in 1862, and the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1875, a negative stigma against people of colour is still prominent in American society. Until 1965, “Jim Crow” laws were implemented in specific states in order to force segregation between Whites and Blacks. Acts of nonviolent protest and civil disobedience due to discrimination caused a national uproar in the United States and since, has inspired minorities to break stereotypes and eradicate oppression. In example, the Rodney King Riots of 1992 was the result of police brutality towards an African-American motorist in which Rodney King, (the victim) was violently beat by four L.A.P.D Officers. Another example of civil disobedience is the Montgomery Bus Boycott, inspired by Rosa Parks in 1955. Four days prior to the boycott, Parks was arrested and fined for refusing to give up her seat a white man. In order to protest segregated seating, African-American Alabamians refused to ride city buses. After a 381 day court hearing, the U.S. Supreme Court ordered Montgomery to integrate its bus system. Leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. aimed to achieve equality between all races in a nonviolent setting whereas advocates like Malcolm X believed that progression would only be caused by radical action. Overall, the idea of elganitariansm is still an ongoing battle in which people are still fighting to meet basic rights and fair treatment.
Although The Civil Rights Movement has raised awareness to the unfair treatment of minorities, complete equity has yet to be achieved. Anti-minority hate groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, the Aryan Brotherhood, and the John Birch Society have been established in order to suppress the development of civil rights. However, groups such as the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) oppose the “traditional” ideals of White Supremacy and Conservatism. That being said, people are still continuing to pursue equality amongst all minorities in campaigns such as #BlackLivesMatter and push to create diversity in North America (ex. Syrian Refugees, Opposing Trump’s Travel Ban, etc.).
The most effective way to eradicate oppression is to rid of the negative stereotypes in regards to minority groups. By teaching youth that diversity is advantageous and allowing them to associate with a range of different people, we can create a future in which equality is the societal norm. Another way to end inequity is allowing people to express the extent of how discrimination has impacted them. This raises awareness of the issue at hand, and allows a person to have more perspective on societal issues. Even President John F. Kennedy has argued that the Civil Rights Movement is moral, constitutional and legal, ultimately proving that oppression is substandard.It is important for students to learn about Societal Movements as it allows them to understand the privileges that have been granted. Many rights and liberties that people possess are a result of years of abuse and strife. However, many of the issues in regards to these movements still exist in today’s society. Understanding these movements allows people to empathize with the minority group, preventing the same injustices from repeating.
Overall, the impact of the Civil Rights Movement has raised awareness to the unfair treatment of minorities as well as inspired equity amongst all people. Although the movement is over half a century old, it is still prominent in modern day society. People are continually fighting against prejudice in order to receive fair treatment and equal opportunity. However, it is up to society to rid of the negative stigma against minorities in order to achieve ultimate equity.
