The Holocaust Education Centre was an interesting experience as I got the opportunity to see first hand accounts of the impact the Holocaust has on society. The educator/tour guide we had has personal connections to the Holocaust as his family was directly effected by the actions of the Nazi's and Axis powers. What shocked me was the disrespect that came from certain individuals on the topic. While my group was doing the workshop, one girl had fallen asleep, and during the tour, a boy kept speaking over the guide. Although I don't agree with the actions, to see the contrast between those who take the issue seriously and those who are ignorant allowed me to understand that it isn't a lack of care, but a lack of education that results in such behaviour. I sympathize with those effected by the Holocaust, however, I can never fully comprehend their grief as I have no connection to Jewish history or WWII. That being said, I now have more compassion for those who have experienced the aftermath of the Holocaust and plan on being more considerate of their feelings and emotions.
Victoria's Parliament Building
Our trip to the parliament buildings in Victoria was very educational as we learnt the importance of Canadian history and how the government was established. We also learnt the meaning behind the British Columbian flag, Coat of Arms, and the significance of having the Queen as our head of state. It is important to know about Canadian government as the government plays a key role to society, and our every day lives. My favourite part of the trip was during lunch when the server split 30 salads on the floor. I felt awful for the guy, but it was still a highlight. Another part I remember was when me and Mustafa googled the answers to the Scavenger Hunt and Zanikos knew we cheated because we didn't go to the back field. Classic Maria, calling the children out on their shenanigans.
New York (Even Though I Wasn't There?)
New York was a splendid time, full of memories I won't have because I wasn't there. Instead, I was "in the library" working extremely hard on my Action Plan. I hope that you all enjoyed your trip to the big apple. I wish I had the opportunity to watch the Mets game and visit the 9/11 museum. However, I was able to GET LOTS OF WORK DONE and did not go on EXTENDED COFFEE RUNS ;)
